The UAI was founded on the view that localised food systems can create more value for farmers, agro-processors and communities while reducing the environmental cost of food compared to traditional large scale commercial farming.

We seek to enable Inner City farmers to be profitable and sustainable while enhancing local economies.

Our vision is to become the leading social impact agricultural initiative in South Africa.

Who we are

Using this lens, the UAI’s mission is to develop:

  • 100 new agri-based businesses in the inner city;
  • provide infrastructure to aspiring farmers;
  • provide existing farmers with capital and input support;
  • provide technical support services to each farmer; and
  • secure market to absorb produce from farm operations.

Why we exist

The UAI exists to stimulate job creation, provide entrepreneurial opportunity and reduce the strain on food security and food resilience by providing inner-city inhabitants with business opportunities in the farming sector. In doing so, we have committed to providing, connecting and expanding an urban food ecosystem to unlock opportunities and advance local economies.
